Charles River Watershed Association worked with the Town of Milford to design and construct the Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) within Milford Town Park. The GSI project consists of two rain gardens and one underground infiltration chamber system in the town park by two schools. Two of the goals of this project are to reduce stormwater pollution and build climate resilience. To complete the project, the Association installed three wayside exhibits to further community engagement and youth education.
“Stormwater pollution is one of the greatest threats to the Charles River. When it rains or snows, water runs off our roofs, sidewalks, driveways, and roads – all the impervious surfaces that make up our built environment – picking up pollution along the way. Milford’s traditional stormwater pipes create a super-highway for pollution and bring it straight to the Charles River. This polluted runoff degrades the river ecosystem and carries excess nutrients that cause invasive species growth and cyanobacteria blooms.” – Robert Kearns, Climate Resilience Specialist, Charles River Watershed Association
The Association purchased three Double Pedestal Exhibit Bases to fit 36” x 24” Fiberglass Embedded panels. The stability of the double post configuration provides support for larger panels. The minimal profile design of the Single Pedestal base is maintained while giving additional strength. This style of wayside exhibit is also situated at a viewing angle of 45 degrees for ideal accessibility.
“This project is in the central community gathering space in the community, a park with youth sports, community events and festivals, and musical performances at the bandstand. The interpretive signs are in three languages so everyone in the community can read them and learn about the project, which is in an environmental justice community.” – Robert Kearns, Climate Resilience Specialist, Charles River Watershed Association
