The beautiful beach community of Slaughter Beach, Delaware, was experiencing the negative effects of sign pollution. Rule, regulation, directional, and instructional signs displayed along fences and on poles left a disorderly and incongruent appearance in the community. The outdoor sign pollution took away from the beach landscape and the visual clusters of signage were left unread and ignored.
Slaughter Beach needed a solution to gain back the attention of beach guests and successfully communicate the importance of the natural beach landscape. Educating visitors on how they can help preserve the local environment became a top priority. The solution was investing in long-lasting, durable outdoor signs from Pannier.
“We learned that Pannier manufactures panels for the National Park Service and it seemed like a no-brainer. Other sign shops could not compete with Pannier’s capabilities and portfolio. Pannier’s professionalism and familiarity made this project efficient and fun.” —Stewart Andrews, Founder & Creative Director, Noodlebox Design
Pannier worked with Noodlebox Design to manufacture 20 Gel Coat Laminate (GCL) panels with four different designs. Pannier’s GCL panels thrive in harsh environments. Salty, sandy, and sunny beaches are no match for the added barrier of protection GCL provides. The four designs on the panels highlight Slaughter Beach’s shorebirds, fish and mammals, natural beaches, and the abundant population of horseshoe crabs. Each panel design also includes the beaches’ previous rules, condensed and restated in a positive manner under a section titled “How You Can Help.”
“Once we were approved to work with Pannier, we knew they had things covered. The graphic design firm, Noodlebox Design, was able to download a template that made the layout exact and to their specifications. Having a high-resolution proof in-hand within days was a delight. Pannier shipped the panels on-time and they looked terrific.” —Stewart Andrews, Founder & Creative Director, Noodlebox Design
The project also included 14 aluminum Cantilevered exhibit bases to display the colorful and informative outdoor signs. The Cantilevered design is approachable. It places the panel at a natural viewing angle, while still showing off the unique beach landscape. Installed in high-traffic locations around Slaughter Beach, the exhibits are gaining a lot of attention. Previously ignored, visitors now want to read and learn from the outdoor signs!
“It’s encouraging that a small community with limited funds and a small group of volunteer leaders could create a series of interpretive panels that provide such inviting information. Pannier helped bring this idea to life.” —Stewart Andrews, Founder & Creative Director, Noodlebox Design
