Adventure Aquarium, located minutes from Philadelphia in Camden, New Jersey, is home to more than 8,500 marine species including the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast, sea turtles and the endangered African Penguin. In early 2018, the aquarium debuted Penguin Island, a new interactive area that gives guests a more engaging experience with the species through educational displays. Pannier was selected to manufacture the signage in a series of frameless exhibit bases including rail mounts, wall mounts and cut-to-shape Fiberglass Embedded (FE) panels.
As an accredited institution by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Adventure Aquarium takes part in several programs to ensure the safety and survival of African Penguins. At Penguin Island, guests can expect to see the penguins living in a more natural habitat with multiple viewpoints. Low profile signage will educate patrons on the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) initiative, as well as what they can do to save the species long after their visit to the aquarium. Additional wayside panels include information on a variety of topics such as penguin eating habits and how fast they can swim.
One of the most unique parts of the project is the “Featured Penguins of the Day” interpretive display. The wall mount contains interchangeable graphic panels about each penguin at Penguin Island. Because no two penguins are exactly the same, it gives guests a special way to connect personally with the endangered species that so badly need our help.
