Recently, Friends of The Buford’s Massacre Battlefield partnered with Pannier Graphics to create historical signage for a once-forgotten Revolutionary War Battle that took place in Waxhaws, a region between North & South Carolina.
Buford’s Massacre was a Revolutionary War Battle between a Continental Force led by Abraham Buford and a British Force led by Banastre Tarleton that took place on May 29th, 1780. The dispute arose from British Military Leaders wanting to take back control of Southern Colonies. On May 27th, 1780, Lt. Tarleton was assigned to catch up with and battle Col. Buford’s Continental Army. Along the way, Tarleton sent Buford a message offering them the ability to surrender. Buford rejected the proposal and replied, “I reject your proposals, and shall defend myself to the last extremity.” Eventually, The British caught up with The Continentals and the battle ensued. After 15 minutes of fighting, Buford’s men were badly beaten by The Tarleton led force. Many of Buford’s men attempted to surrender, which was ignored, leading to an even bloodier massacre. These actions dubbed Tarleton with the nickname ‘Bloody Ban’ & ‘Ban the Butcher.’
Friends of The Buford Massacre Battlefield was formed by a group of senior motorcycle riders. Early in 2011, while on a ride, they came upon the Buford Battlefield site and met Mrs. Emily Carnes Franklin. Miss Emily was singularly busy raking leaves at the battlefield park. She approached the riders and, upon request, explained to them the importance of this forgotten battle of the Revolutionary War. Many of the riders were veterans and they were saddened by the poor condition of the battlefield and dismayed that not even an American flag was flying over the mass gravesite to honor the supreme sacrifice of the 84 patriots buried there. The group of motorcycle riders pledged to help raise awareness about the battle and raised funding to renovate the area, leading to the signage additions they recently installed.
This signage project features four Double Pedestals with Gel Coat Laminate Panels. Double Pedestals effortlessly uphold larger panels in comparison to the single pedestal, all while preserving their sleek, minimalist design. Paired with the added protection of Gel Coat Laminate Panels, these signs will last for many years to come.
