Interpretive trail signs provide opportunities for trail users from near and far and of all ages and abilities to develop a connection and appreciation for the surrounding landscape. Durable signs installed throughout the trail, from trailhead to trailhead, make for a unified and memorable experience. South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks made this a top priority when working on the signage for South Dakota’s Mickelson Trail.
The George S. Mickelson Trail covers 117 miles through the Black Hills of southwest South Dakota. The trail is home to 16 trailheads, over 100 converted railroad bridges, and four rock tunnels. To complement the beauty of the trail and share its rich history, there are dozens of interpretive trail signs to inform and educate trail users along the way.
In early 2020, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks saw a need for new trailhead signage along the Mickelson Trail. The existing signs were installed in the early 1990s and began to show their age; many were impossible to read. Having worked with Pannier on past projects, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks staff knew who to call for durable trail signage, even if 2020 posed some unexpected challenges.

Trails across the United States experienced a surge of activity in 2020 and the new Mickelson Trail interpretive trail signs were installed just in time for “socially-distant” summer biking and hiking. South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks installed 16 Fiberglass Embedded panels and Upright exhibit bases with a beautiful NPS Brown powder coat finish. The signs greet trail users at each of the 16 trailheads showcasing a map, trail history, regulations, and cautionary tips.
