The City of Lancaster is one of the largest historic districts in the country, according to the National Register of Historic Places. The African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania has initiated a program to educate visitors on the history of the area. Approximately 25 historical sites, people and events have been identified for interpretive outdoor panels and exhibit bases.
The AAHS has partnered with Pannier to manufacture the durable historical signage. Ten fiberglass embedded panels and exhibit bases have already been installed, two more are in the process, and there are plans for another ten to be completed.
“We chose Pannier because of the company’s track record as a leader in the field of wayfinding and interpretive signage, and the fact that their markers are durable enough to convey these important stories for many years to come.”
~Randolph Harris, Consulting Historian
A variety of sizes and exhibit base styles have been used at the sites. Thus far most of the fiberglass panels have been installed into frames and then either onto the wall, or freestanding. They also created a few larger panels that were bonded to aluminum, holes drilled, and attached to walls for a frameless appearance. Included on the panel designs are QR codes, or URLS, that take visitors to the Lancaster County Historical Society’s website to find even more history on events and people highlighted on the signage.
The Society’s marker program includes original research, design and installation of historical signage. These efforts are funded in part through guided walking tours of the City of Lancaster the Society coordinates and staffs with volunteers, and AAHS continues to work with local businesses and property owners for support.
“Pannier’s staff is consistently responsive and attentive to every detail of the process of ordering, fabricating and delivery of our markers and installation components.”
~Randolph Harris
