Home to the third-largest Shaker community in the United States between 1805 and 1910, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is Kentucky’s largest National Historic Landmark. Shaker Village attracts thousands of visitors every year to experience the 3,000-acre property, home to 34 original Shaker structures.
Managing accessibility is often a challenge at historic properties. The staff at Shaker Village recognized this and worked with Pannier to design accessible interpretive exhibits. The exhibits were later installed around the Historic Centre for every guest to enjoy. This project gained even more importance this year as traditional events and educational experiences were forced to be put on hold.
“In this time of COVID-19, we have postponed our normal, daily guided tours. The interpretive exhibits helped fill an interpretation gap left by the temporary removal of tours.” —Billy Rankin, Vice President of Public Programming & Organizational Strategy, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Interpretive exhibits are a Pannier specialty and we were happy to help. Pannier manufactured 20 Fiberglass Embedded panels and 20 Cantilevered exhibit bases for the Shaker Village project. Cantilevered exhibit bases provide a minimal, but strong structure, placing the panel at an optimal viewing angle. These bases are the preferred style for the National Park Service (NPS). Ideal for interpretation, you can find Pannier Cantilevered exhibit bases at hundreds of NPS locations across the country.
“Pannier has a strong reputation and extensive work with National Park Service. Easy communication, fast turnaround, and we are very pleased with the end products. They are getting rave reviews.” —Billy Rankin, Vice President of Public Programming & Organizational Strategy, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Through these new interpretive exhibits, visitors will have the opportunity to discover connections to the past for years to come. The content on the beautifully designed Fiberglass Embedded panels showcases the history of the Pleasant Hill Shakers, the natural landscape, and agricultural production currently in practice on the property.
“Pannier has been a very professional and engaging company to work with. We will not hesitate to work with Pannier on future projects of this nature.” —Billy Rankin, Vice President of Public Programming & Organizational Strategy, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Pannier is here to provide interpretive solutions in a time where tours and other personalized services are temporarily unavailable. Interpretive exhibits enhance learning experiences at the visitors’ convenience and are easily accessible to all.
